McDonald's Healthy Eating Campaign Sparks Debate

In today's newspaper The Record out of Bergen County, New Jersey has an interesting topic on a new take for McDonalds. The initiative includes taking McDonald's on a new healthy route, though some may disagree that McDonald's is not worthy enough to begin its campaign. McDonald's has decided to launch a new program called "McDonald's Nutrition Network".? McDonald's has begun spiking the interest of non-profit organizations in the Tri-State New York/New Jersey/ Connecticut area to assist in making the public aware of the new healthy way of eating at McDonald's including showing the vast change that McDonald's has overcome in recent years.

?

"We've sold over 1 billion salads in the U.S.A.," boasted Peter Samaha, a member of the executive board of the McDonald's New York Tri-State Owners and Operators Association. "We sell as much chicken as beef. We offer so many low-calorie choices now."

?

Although McDonald's is making a wise choice to contribute to a healthier society, some people are not on board with the healthy initiative.

?

Lisa R. Young, an adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University, feels that,

?

"They're giving out grants to promote health, but the fast-food industry is a major contributor to the obesity problem in America. They contribute to our unhealthy society. And I wouldn't be able to speak like this if I was being funded by McDonald's."

?

While Jim White, a spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Chicago argues that McDonald's is doing a better thing for themselves and their customers. His argument includes the reasoning that anything that is being done to educate Americans how to eat healthier is not a failing plight.? And I would have to agree. Regardless of where the education is coming from, the knowledge that people can be given by experts in the field is not something that should be disregarded.
