ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos says the state ethics board dominated by Democrats is giving special treatment to a politically active abortion rights group by keeping its donors secret.
Skelos is demanding that the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics suspend any protection granted to NARAL Pro-Choice NY until it publicly sets policy for granting the exception. The commission can withhold records of contributors to lobbying groups if the group can show its donors could be in danger.
Its commissioners said this week they want the board to revisit its practice of granting the secrecy without public debate.
Several commissioners said this week that the board has sometimes made mistakes by being too secretive in the past.
The commission had no initial comment Thursday.
