One State in India Attempts to Pass Law Restricting Conversions to Christianity

Madhya Pradesh, a state located in central India, has approved a bill that would require all peoples converting to Christianity to only do so with government permission. If one were to convert without the government's permission, that person could be convicted of a crime and face punishment. The state is ruled by the BJP political party known for its anti-Christian sentiments. Will this bill be signed into law?

8/2/2013 India (CBN) - Converting to Christianity without government permission could soon be a crime in one state in India.

Morning Star News reports the legislature in Madhya Pradesh approved the bill this month and it awaits the governor's signature.

The state is ruled by the BJP political party, a Hindu nationalist group.

The new legislation requires pastors and potential converts to notify government officials 30 days in advance.

Those failing to do so face a fine and up to three years in jail.
