1 protester killed in Sri Lankan military shooting

? One person has been killed and about 15 wounded when Sri Lanka's military shot at a protest demanding clean drinking water in a town northeast of the capital.

At least 4,000 protesters gathered in Weliweriya some 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of the capital Colombo on Thursday. A protester who spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisals, says chemical emissions from a factory into water sources has polluted drinking water in about 15 surrounding villages.

He says police used tear gas initially to break up the protest and when protesters clashed with the police, the army shot at them indiscriminately.

Police spokesman Buddika Siriwardene said one person has died and 15 others hospitalized but declined to comment on the nature of the injuries.
