Coburn calls Washington a 'kindergarten'

By Staff Reports on Aug 1, 2013, at 11:08 AM??

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn compared the nation's capital to a kindergarten Thursday and said he will not be "pushed around" by special interest groups like the ones trying to rally Republicans behind an audacious scheme to stop implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

"We are a mess," Coburn said during an appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe program. "I call it the kindergarten in Washington."

Coburn, as he often has in the past, went on to lament what he calls a lack of leadership in both Congress and the White House, and a fixation on "political power."

Responding to questions about the blogger Erick Erickson, who attacked Coburn for his opposition to an effort to "defund" the ACA by shutting off funding to the entire federal government, Coburn said "you can't respond to bloggers. ... Unless you agree with them 100 percent of the time you don't pass muster."

Coburn said Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified information to a reporter and then fled to Russia, "is undoubtedly, in my opinion, a traitor."

But, Coburn said, "most of what he knows the Russians probably already know."
